At St Michael & All Angels Stonebridge, we are living to make a difference by being a Christian heart at the centre of the community. Everyone is welcome.

On Sundays we worship together at a Parish Eucharist at 10am in the church, and at 1:30pm there is a teleconference Service of the Word, “Church on the Phone” for those who dial in remotely.

For this week’s news, see our pewsheet “The Messenger” here in Word or PDF format. This Sunday, 1st June, will be the Seventh Sunday of Easter. As the Easter season draws to a close we continue learning about the foundation of the early church with a reading from the Acts of the Apostles, and more about Jesus preparing his disciples to receive the Holy Spirit.

I hope you find the early summer season as stimulating to your faith as we do. There are several key events that we celebrate:

The Feast of the Ascension: Forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus Christ said an earthly farewell to his apostles once again as he ascended to heaven. This feast is therefore celebrated forty days after Easter Sunday, and always falls on a Thursday (this year 29th May).

Pentecost Sunday: As he prepared the disciples for his leave-taking Jesus promised them that God the Father and He would send them the Holy Spirit. This event took place on the day we now call Pentecost, fifty days after Easter Sunday (this year 8th June). We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to ordinary humans who believe, and all the gifts of the Spirit for which we pray.

This year we are trying out a tradition held by many other churches: dressing in red for Pentecost Sunday. (We emphasise that this is optional: please don’t go out and buy new clothes specially!) We would love it if you would join us for a celebration of the Holy Spirit and the gifts He brings.

The Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity Sunday, a day when we focus on celebration of our One True God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Of course we always worship God as Trinity, but is traditional to meditate upon some of the aspects of the Trinity on this day. Then, during the many summer Sundays after Trinity, we often focus on the teachings of Jesus, especially in his parables.

We have just held our annual meeting, the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, with information about all the church’s recent activities. If you would like to find out more, the reports given at the meeting on Sunday 18th May are all available in Word or PDF format from our APCM page (under the Resources tab above).

We have a stained glass window showing Jesus as the Good Shepherd, in our south aisle:

Regular Services:

Our Saturday Service is held at 4:30pm. We have a time of Praise and Worship followed by a service of Holy Communion. You might find this useful if your work patterns or activities make it difficult to attend our main Parish Eucharist on Sunday mornings. We use the same Bible readings as the main Sunday service. Perhaps you would like to sing worship songs together, or you like a smaller and less formal service (which is held in our beautiful Lady Chapel). Everyone is welcome!

Morning Prayer is held at 9:15 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. At the moment we are online only, so if you are interested please ask for the Zoom link. We follow a simple version of the Church of England service including a psalm and two Bible readings every day, and the service takes around 25-30 minutes.

Hall bookings

We’re allowed to meet again! Have you been waiting to celebrate something or start a new class or activity?

We have a hall large enough for 120 guests available to hire on a casual basis at weekends including Saturdays until 10pm or some weekday evenings. We are also open to community groups, classes and courses using the space more regularly. The halls may be viewed by appointment on Sundays and sometimes Saturdays, and there is a hall booking phone line (07704 694432) taking calls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
