We support Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals in our church building at St Michael and All Angels. Funerals are also possible at cemeteries or crematorium chapels.
Weddings
Marriage is a big step on a lifelong journey that offers joy and challenges in equal measure. For this reason many people still choose to be married in the traditional way, in church with the blessing of God and in front of family and friends. Brides and grooms have been coming to St Michael’s to be married since the first church was built on this site in the nineteenth century. Your own family may have been part of that tradition for generations, or your connection with St Michael’s may be a more recent one. We welcome your interest and answer some of the frequently asked questions below.
Hall Hire
In all facilities, our aim is to offer well maintained, user-friendly, accessible spaces as part of St Michael and All Angels’ outreach to the community. For many years, St Michael and All Angels’ Church Hall has been a very useful resource for the community and we hope it will continue to be a hub for many events in the future. There are 2 rooms which can be hired together or separately, along with a kitchen.
Hall hire is now possible again for regular groups and for one-off events. We may need to discuss your needs and your safety in more detail than would have been the case prior to the pandemic so please be in touch with us as early in your planning process as possible. That said, it’s lovely to hear joyful voices on our site once more!
Funerals
If someone close to you has just died, as well as your grieving, the practical arrangements can be daunting. There is no right or wrong way to mourn: some people wish to start planning the funeral very soon and others need to take some time. Please rest assured that we at St Michael’s will do what we can to help. It is possible to hold funerals in the church itself and then move on for burial or cremation, or to ask our ministers to preside at a crematorium.
Our Vicar and Pastoral Team are available to help where we can. Anyone living within the parish, or mourning for someone close by, is very welcome to contact us for spiritual care and enquiries about funerals.
Funeral Directors organise the event, liaising between the mourners, the cemetery, the church and co-ordinating all the logistics. You are best advised to choose a funeral director early on, and they will help with all the practicalities, including booking the church.
We aim to respond to funeral inquiries as quickly as we possibly can.
BAPTISM
Baptism is recognition of God's welcome and love for us. It is one of the sacraments of the church: an outward physical sign of an inward spiritual grace. God is present in all our lives and loves every baby whether baptised or not. When you bring your child for Baptism we are celebrating their birth and also formally receiving them into God's family, the church.
